Brake system

If something really started moving, the termination of this movement often appears very complex challenge. Only not at Audi 80: thanks to big brakes on its kinetic energy, naturally, within physical possibilities, it is easily possible «to impose a bridle».

Independent repair of brake system

Behind such important element as the brake system, cannot be too much control! So if you glance from time to time, whether all there at you as it should be, that, means, carry out a task of car servicing, than the driver who is simply looking after a certain period in a workshop for carrying out servicing better. We insistently advise to carry out careful control especially before a long trip (to holiday), and the more so to owners not absolutely new car.

On the other hand, repair work over brake system demands a responsibility increased feeling. Thanks to our chapter about brakes you can even in house conditions them supervise and repair, including a hydraulic drive of brake system. In similar cases you should solve, whether level of your knowledge for the correct performance of these works is sufficient.

Principle of work of brakes

  • If you press a brake pedal, the rod connected with a pedal presses two pistons located one by one in the main brake cylinder (located in a motor compartment).
  • Pistons squeeze out the brake liquid which was there. Pressure arising thus in brake system is transferred on pipelines to wheel cylinders.
  • In them pistons press brake shoes to brake disks.
  • On back wheels of the Audi 80 cars which have been let out till October, 1992, capacity of 66 kW who have not been equipped with ABS system, brake shoes nestle on a brake drum. Other versions, and also the version in capacity of 66 kW, equipped with ABS system, behind are supplied, as well as in front, disk brake mechanisms.
  • Pressure of liquid appears in two systems of pipelines independent from each other (contours of a brake drive), namely for one forward wheel and the back wheel located opposite to it (diagonal division of brake system with a double-circuit drive).
  • If one contour of brake system fails, one forward wheel and a back wheel on other party of the car can be still braked. With not braking forward wheel still it is possible to operate the car, and not braking back wheel keeps a back part of the car in a track.
  • The parking brake affects back wheels with means of a hummock drive – not very well, whether drum-type or disk brake mechanisms are established there.
  • In older front-wheel Audi models with 4-or the 5-cylinder engine it was possible to get anti-blocking system (ABS) for additional payment. Since January, 1993 of ABS enters into serial equipment; all-wheel drive models and versions with the 6-cylinder engine were serially equipped with ABS from the very beginning. In more detail about ABS you learn in the following chapter.

Help: if one contour of a brake drive fails, you will need to press much more strongly a pedal (at at the same time increased course of a pedal) to achieve braking. The brake way also becomes longer.
