The indicator of temperature of cooling liquid

The sensor of ambient temperature (shooter) is located in a bumper at the left behind a front grille.

At the left: under the temperature sensor of system of injection (2) the model with the 5-cylinder engine has an electronic thermoswitch (1). Scheme of an arrangement of contacts the following:

T – the temperature indicator;
+ – a food;
With – a control bulb «an overheat of cooling liquid».

On the right: models with the 6-cylinder engine have the same electronic thermoswitch (shooter) with the identical scheme of an arrangement of contacts. It is screwed in in the pipeline with cooling liquid, behind to the right of the engine.

The indicator of temperature of cooling liquid operates approximately as well as the indicator of amount of fuel. A food arrives to the device at the included ignition, connection on "weight" occurs via the temperature sensor on the engine. This sensor represents the resistance passing the more current, than the temperature so the bimetallic element in the device heats up more strongly owing to what the needle deviates further is higher. In Audi two various types of temperature sensors are used.

  • The standard sensor ("overheat" combined with the switch for a signaling device of temperature of cooling liquid). It is established in models with the 4-cylinder engine, not equipped with the conditioner.
  • Electronic thermoswitch (has also other functions) in models with the 4-cylinder engine, equipped with the conditioner, and also in models with 5-and the 6-cylinder engine.
  • Arrangement of contacts of the temperature sensor – on illustrations.

 Help: at too high temperature of cooling liquid the red blinking warning signaling device in addition lights up. In the cars equipped with system of autocheck, there is a symbol «cooling liquid».


  • The inexact indicator of temperature of cooling liquid at at the same time inexact indicator of amount of gasoline indicates the damaged voltage stabilizer.
  • The reason of completely absent indication can be both the temperature sensor, and the device.
  • At the correct indicator, but at the same time blinking signaling device it is necessary to check the sensor of level of the cooling liquid, located in a broad tank.

Check of the indicator of temperature of cooling liquid


  1. To separate the tip of the temperature sensor in a motor compartment.
  2. With slice of a wire to extend separate plug contact to the temperature indicator (a dark blue-brown wire) in the multicontact tip and to bring to the bared metal ("weight").
  3. For a while to include ignition: if motionless before the indicator needle starts to move now on a scale, means, the temperature sensor is faulty – to replace.
  4. If in the indicator changes nothing, means, there is a gap in conducting, or defect of the indicator. Its removal is described at the beginning of head.
